Laurel Hill SP - Kooser SP - Hidden Valley
Laurel Hill State Park just off PA Route 31 - About 2 miles east of Kooser State Park (turn to pass Pioneer Park Campground and Laurel hill is about a mile on your right) Laurel Hill has some skiable trails and the Pumphouse Trail or Tram Trail (relatively flat) to a small dam on Jones Mill Run is particularly scenic (Watch out for snowmobiles on Pumphouse Trail). Tram trail reqires considerable snow cover for the rocky areas. Check the Laurel Hill Park Map for trails and directions. Laurel Hill also has a large sledding area in the lower campground area and a good portion of the campground is skiable. The Laurel Hill Lodge may be rented in the winter for groups. The lodge will sleep 14 guests in five double beds (pull-out couches) and six twin beds (bunk beds). The lodge has three bathrooms (two full, one ¾), one and one-half kitchens, recreation room and laundry.
Kooser State Park on PA Route 31, approximately 8 miles west of Somerset, PA, borders on Hidden Valley's property and has approximately two miles of easy sometimes-groomed ski trails. A very scenic park where the ski trail circles the lake and follows a small stream crossing occasionally on small wooden bridges. Parking area is plowed in the winter, there is no charge for skiing, and winter rental cabins are available. Click for Park Map
Hidden Valley, just west of Kooser SP, is basically a downhill ski area. At the barn on Route 31 they is now the snow tubing center. I understand they also have cross country ski rentals there. A local volunteer group, Hidden Valley Nordic Ski Patrol, help keep the nearby trails in shape for cross country skiing and provide patroling duty on weekends when area skiing is available.
